Resources for evolutionary biology vs. scientific creationism study and
discussion
Version 1.00 Last update: 950504
Compiled by Wesley R. Elsberry (welsberr@orca.tamu.edu)
This resource list was compiled by taking various FAQ materials, logs
of the Evolution Echo, logs of parts of talk.origins, and ruthlessly extracting
a few interesting bits. Rather a lot has been lifted verbatim from posts
or FAQs of folks like Chris Stassen, Chris Colby, James Rusk, Jeff Otto,
and Marty Leipzig. If credit is due anyone, these people should get their
share. Blame can devolve squarely upon me. (I know how to redirect flames
to /dev/null.)

BOOKS
Much of the following comes from lists compiled by Chris Stassen, James
Rusk, Matthew P. Wiener, Andrew Macrae, James Lippard, and Chris Colby.
Especially where a book has review style comments, you are probably looking
at the original text from one of the above people. Where the same book
was reviewed by two different people (or the same person twice), both synopses
are given.
Yes, there are a couple of entries that aren't books.

Cairns-Smith is the best-known proponent of the "clay life" hypothesis.
This book describes what Cairns-Smith believes to be the main problems
with "standard" abiogenesis scenarios, and an overview of his own. If you
want a more technical book with lots of references, get his book, "Genetic
Takeover" instead.

Futuyma, Douglas. 1986[BioSci,Tech,*]. Evolutionary Biology (Second Edition).
Sinauer Associates, 600 pp., ~$50.
-
(1) The most regularly recommended college biology textbook in talk.origins.
(2) The text assumes some previous knowledge of biology, but reviews most
critical background material. It contains numerous references to the primary
literature. Most of the information in this file can be found (along with
the references to the primary literature) in this text.
-
Gamlin & Vines. 1991[BioSci,Tech]. The Evolution of Life. Oxford U.,
249 pp.
-
Geisler, Norman L. 1982[SciCre]. The Creator in the Courtroom. Milford:
Mott Media Inc.
-
Dr. Geisler is a professor of theology who was one of the defense "theological
witnesses" (supporting creationism) [at the 1981 Arkansas Trial]. It's
pretty interesting to read both this book and Dr. Gilkey's book. One wonders
if they were both at the same trial.
-
Gilkey, Langdon. 1985. Creationism On Trial: Evolution and God at Little
Rock. Minneapolis: Winston Press.
-
Dr. Gilkey is a liberal theologian who was one of the "theological witnesses"
for the plaintiffs (who were trying to get the law declared unconstitutional)
[at the 1981 Arkansas Trial].
-
Gish, Duane. 1985[SciCre]. Evolution: The Challenge of the Fossil Record.
San Diego: Master Books.
-
This is a revised and expanded version of Gish's famous book, _Evolution:
The Fossils Say No!_. If one is only going to have two creationist titles,
this is the second one to buy [Morris is first].
-
Godfrey, Laurie (ed.). 1983[Anti,*]. Scientists Confront Creationism. New
York, W. W. Norton & Co., 324 pp., P-$8.95, ISBN 0-393-30154-0.
-
(1) A series of essays written by experts in diverse scientific fields
aimed specifically at explaining where many creationist arguments are incorrect.
(2) The best reference there was until Strahler's book. Shorter and easier
to read. It's a collection of essays on various relevant topics from experts
in each field.
-
Gonick and Wheelis. 1991. The Cartoon Guide to Genetics. Harper Perennial,
215 pp.
-
Gonick is the author of the "science cartoons" that frequently appear in
_Discover_ magazine. A highly recommended introduction to the history of
genetics and biology. Now being used as a text in some college courses.
-

-
Hanawalt, Philip C. (ed.) 1980[Abio]. Molecules to Living Cells. San Francisco,
W.H. Freeman and Company, ISBN 0-7167-1209-1.
-
[This] is a collection of reprints of _Scientific American_ articles relevant
to the topic of the origin of life. It includes several interesting articles
and many references to the technical literature. The only problem is that
there is little to tie it together into a unified whole; it is a mish-mash
of various authors' views.
-
Hanson, Robert (ed.) 1985[Anti]. Science and Creation: Geological, Theological
and Educational Perspectives. Macmillan Publishing Co., H-$24.95, ISBN
0-02-949870-8.
-
Hartl & Clark. 1989[BioSci,*]. Principles of Population Genetics. Sinauer,
Sunderland, Mass.
-
A good introductory text into population genetics, the field that mathematically
describes changes in the gene pool. None of the math is very daunting (it's
just an intro text after all) but it's really critical (IMHO) to understanding
what evolution is all about. And again, lots of refs.
-
Hofbauer, Josef, & Karl Sigmund. 1988[Abio]. THE THEORY OF EVOLUTION
AND DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS. Cambridge.
-
[This] is on the mathematics of evolution. Chapters 10-13 provides an introduction
to the theory of prebiotic evolution, from branching processes to autocatalysis
and hypercycles.
-
Kitcher, Phillip. 1982[Anti,Phil]. Abusing Science: The Case against Creationism,
The MIT Press, P-$8.95, ISBN 0-262-61037-X.
-
Not recommended for creationists, who will likely find it offensive. Kitcher
plays hardball with creationist tactics and arguments.
-
LaFollette, Marcel. 1983. Creationism, Science and the Law: The Arkansas
Case, MIT Press, P-$11.95, ISBN 0-262-62041-3.
-
Larson, Edward J. 1989[*]. Trial and Error. Oxford University Press, 243
pp. $10.
-
A detailed history of the legal aspects of the teaching of evolution and
creationism in the United States. Covers roughly 1920 through the Supreme
Court decision on the Louisiana Balanced Treatment Act. (An earlier edition
of this book was written before Arkansas Act 590 was struck down.)
-
Li and Grauer. 1991[BioSci,*]. Fundamentals of Molecular Evolution. Sinauer,
Sunderland, Mass.
-
A text that deals with the interface of molecular biology and evolution.
A very concise introduction to this field.
-
Loomis, William F. 1988[Abio]. Four Billion Years: An Essay on the Evolution
of Genes and Organisms. Massachusetts, Sinauer Associates, ISBN 0-87893-476-6
(0-87893-475-8 hardback).
-
(1) Loomis gives a relatively detailed treatment of "standard" abiogenesis
scenarios. I like this reference, because Loomis spends the most time on
the hardest problems -- many other texts seem to gloss over the difficulties
and get detailed only when it is "safe." (2) A relatively technical abiogenesis
scenario. Relatively long on speculation, especially near the end. Lots
of hard-core chemistry in the early going. (3) Abiogenesis has nothing
to do with evolution (which assumes the existence of life), but it is a
common point of creationist attack. Loomis presents relatively up-to-date
information on the topic.
-
Macbeth, Norman. 1971. Darwin Retried: An Appeal to Reason. Dell Publishing
Company.
-
Macbeth was a lawyer who read four books on evolution, then set about writing
this tome. An obvious predecessor to Johnson's "Darwin On Trial", this
book demonstrates the same kind of misunderstanding of biology that Johnson
later developed to such a high degree. Especially hilarious is Chapter
17, where Macbeth has a script of a fictional conversation between Goldschmidt,
Mayr, Simpson, and Wright. As a premise, Macbeth sets out to convince the
reader that the concepts of evolutionary biology no longer conform exactly
to Darwinian theory circa 1930. That this is so is not in dispute; Macbeth
is simply another anti-evolutionist who has discovered scientists engaged
in the practice of science.
-
McCollister, Betty (ed.). 1989[Anti,*]. Voices For Evolution. NCSE, 141
pp., $5.
-
A collection of "position statements" of various religious, scientific,
and educational organizations, all against the inclusion of "creation science"
in public school science classes.
-
McGowan, Chris. 1984[Anti,*]. In The Beginning... A Scientist Shows Why
the Creationists Are Wrong. New York, Prometheus, 208 pp., P-$12.95, ISBN
0-87975-240-8.
-
(1) A little expensive for the information content, but written at a much
less technical level than any other book in this section. (2) If I get
to only recommend one book from this category to a creationist, this is
the one I recommend. It's not as useful as a reference, but it's the easiest
one to read.
-
McPhee, J. 1983[Geo,Pop]. In Suspect Terrain. McGraw-Hill, 210 pp.
-
Montagu, Ashley (ed.). 1984[Anti,Pop,*]. Science and Creationism. Oxford
University, 415 pp., H-$35.00, ISBN 0-19-503252-7; P-$13.95, ISBN 0-19-503253-5.
-
(1) A collection of essays on the trial and related topics, several by
"science witnesses" at the trial. (2) A collection of essays on various
topics related to the trial. Probably the best single title on the trial,
as it contains multiple points of view.
-
Morris & Parker. 1982[SciCre]. What Is Creation Science? San Diego:
Master Books.
Morris,
Henry. 1985[SciCre]. Scientific Creationism (Second Edition). San Diego:
Creation-Life Publishers (First edition was 1974).
-
This is actually intended to be a student or teacher handbook of material
to use in science class. It is THE reference on creationist arguments.
If you're only going to own one creationist book, it should be this one
or Gish's Evolution: The Challenge of the Fossil Record.

-
Ross, Hugh. 1989[OEC,+]. The Fingerprint of God (Second Edition). California,
Promise Publishing Company, 234 pp., $11.
-
Ross argues that the universe shows strong evidence that God exists --
but that there is no evidence it is as young as "scientific creationists"
claim. Ross presents modern cosmology at an understandable level and never
strays far from his field of expertise (astrophysics).

-
Shapiro, Robert. 1986[Abio]. Origins: A Skeptic's Guide to the Creation
of Life on Earth. New York, Bantam Books, ISBN 0-553-34355-6.
-
(1) Shapiro gives a skeptical overview of several different abiogenesis
scenarios. Despite the creationist-sounding sub-title ("Creation of life"),
Shapiro is no creationist. I have seen creationists recommend the book,
however, because of Shapiro's high level of skepticism. I believe this
work is slightly dated and some of Shapiro's criticisms are no longer as
appropirate. Still, it is a good read. (2) This is one of two titles which
I've seen for sale in both creationist and evolutionist book-ordering services.
It's the best introduction to the various abiogenesis hypotheses and their
strengths and weaknesses. In my opinion, Shapiro is a little overly skeptical,
and in fact would have to eat a little humble pie on some of his criticisms
-- only seven years after his publication date.

Stanley, S. 1987[Geo]. Earth and Life through Time. Freeman, 689 pp.
-
Strahler, Arthur N. 1987[Anti,*]. Science and Earth History. New York,
Prometheus Books, 552 pp., $47.
-
(1) It is rare to see a creationist argument that is not covered in detail
in this tome. It is an excellent place to start research, and probably
the most heavily used book (when it comes to creationist claims) in my
science library. (2) This is the "evolutionist's encyclopedia." It's about
550 large pages filled with tiny print, and has an awesome index. It's
a little long to just read, but is the best general reference on the topic.
-
Van Till, Howard J., Davis A. Young, and Clarence Menninga. 1988[OEC,*].
Science Held Hostage: What's Wrong with Creation Science AND Evolutionism.
Intervarsity Press, 189 pp., $10).
-
Argues that "creation science" is bad science, and that naturalism is bad
philosophy often shoe-horned in with science.
-
Waechtershaeuser, Guenter. 1990[Abio]. "Evolution of the first metabolic

generation of carbon fixation via pyrites. (Note: the "ue" and "ae" in
his name are ASCII umlauts.)

-
Billed as an "evaluation of problematic statements made by young-earth
creationists in the light of well-established data and principles of sedimentary
geology." Lives up to that billing.
-
Wysong, R. L. 1986[SciCre]. The Creation-Evolution Controversy. Midland:
Inquiry Press.
-
While none of the three titles [Gish, Morris & Parker, Wysong] could
be accused of sterling scholarship, this one is an example of the bottom
of the barrel. I purchased it because *any* really bad creationist argument
can be found in it (the index is pretty good).
-
Young, Davis. 1982[OEC,+]. Christianity and the Age of the Earth. California,
Artisan Press, 188 pp., ~$9.
-
Young presents the age of the earth through Church history, scientific
evidence for the earth's age, and ends with the conclusion that "creation
science" is likely bad for Christianity. (Davis Young is professor of Geology
at Calvin College.)

-
IRC #creation
-
Internet Relay Chat channel #creation provides an interactive forum for
discussion of evolution and creationism. The channel was formed by Mengo,
who one may occasionally find on the channel. If IRC is available on your
Internet host, try this out sometime.
-
Usenet talk.origins newsgroup
-
This discussion newsgroup boasts a large and active readership, with many
very astute participants, several of whom are actually biologists. (Not
that it is surprising to me that a biologist could also be astute...) The
no-holds-barred, flamethrower-at-the-ready ambience of t.o. may put off
the new reader, but quite a lot of very interesting commentary comes through
this newsgroup. Altogether, a heck of a lot of commentary comes through
this newsgroup. The phrase "information overload" seems appropriate. This
newsgroup should be available on most Usenet and Internet host machines
that have a news feed.
-
FidoNet Evolution Echo
-
The pace is less phrenetic on the Evolution Echo, which doesn't have the
amount of traffic of the talk.origins newsgroup. Also, topical discussion
is held to be science-oriented discussion, so the amount of scriptural
exegesis and hermeneutics is held to a minimum. The Evolution Echo is carried
on the "Zone 1 FidoNet backbone", which means that any FidoNet BBS in North
America can start carrying the echo within a couple of days of sysop request.
Consult your local FidoNet BBS sysop for information about getting the
Evolution Echo distirbuted to your local board.
-
Usenet sci.bio.evolution newsgroup
-
Sci.bio.evolution (s.b.e.) is a moderated newsgroup, where only posts of
biological relevance pass Joel Hanes' keen eyes. This group has some wonderful
traffic. Recommended.
-
bionet.molbio newsgroup
-
If you have an interest in molecular biology, you might want to try this
nesgroup out. A fair chunk of the minimal traffic deals with evolutionary
issues. The egos and attitudes, though, can be a definite turn-off.
-
Bible_Science Echo
-
Steve Winter "moderates" this echo. Here's his description: True Science
supports the Biblical account of creation. Evolution and other such theories
are merely unproven theories accepted by faith of those deceived thereby.
Distributed on the PRIME Network.

-
The American Scientific Affiliation (ASA / 55 Market Street / Ipswich,
MA 01938) is a Christian organization that takes no official position on
the creation/evolution controversy. Their journal, _PERSPECTIVES on Science
and Christian Faith_, is intended as a forum for discussion of such issues
