A comment on comp.infosystems.www on just how useless lists of CD's in people's personal pages were got me to thinking about what such lists might actually mean. It seems obvious to me that the people that compile and publish those lists want the reader to come away with an understanding of what their taste in music is, and perhaps feel empathy or disdain depending upon the degree of match or mismatch with their own tastes.

That got me to thinking of my own way of coming up with a new spectacularly useless listing of personal information. I will list out names of family, friends, enemies, acquaintances, and people that I think I've met, but really haven't. Some will have a little description, others will just be disembodied names floating in semi-amnesiac limbo. You may notice that not all the people listed are human.

If you feel like it, you might peruse these names to see if there is any overlap between people you've known, or even (unlikely though that might be) find your own name here. In three years of looking, I've only encountered one person on the net who attended high school with me, and none at all from earlier or later education until my master's work. [Note: the last sentence is no longer true.  At least one fellow student from college contacted me due to finding his name in the last.]  If Webcrawler evers indexes this page, then people on this list might start seeing my taking their name in vain and contact me...

I read somewhere that the typical length of a chain of acquaintances in the USA is five: that between oneself and any other person, the other person is known to someone who knows somebody who knows somebody who knows you. Is that true? I don't have the vaguest notion.
