Notebook computers and wireless communication
It is possible to edit catalog records from the shelves, rather than books having to be brought to the cataloger's desk, through the use of computers with wireless connections to the online catalog. Other opportunities become possible when authorized workers can change things at the shelves. Review/verification/editing become less expensive in terms of time and transferred knowledge when the work can be accomplished at the books' location. "Transferred knowledge" means, for example, the transfer of knowledge from the person who could edit the records to the person who has to go and get the books.
