HEARNE CHRISTMAS PARADE
IS SATURDAY, DECEMBER 13
AT 10:30 AM

Known as "The Crossroads Of Texas," Hearne is nestled at the crossroads of three major highways as well as two major Union Pacific Railroad lines. TX 6, US 79, & US 190 cross in Hearne. The former east-west Missouri Pacific Railroad line converges with the former north-south Southern Pacific Railroad line in Hearne. Union Pacific's Hearne hub sends crews and trains out in many directions.

Hearne's Historic Railroad Depot was recently moved across TX 6 from where it had been for the past 100 years. Efforts are underway to transform this depot into a museum featuring exhibits about the local area as well as railroad and train memorabilia. This depot's floor plans are on file in the U.S. Library of Congress American Memory Collection.

Many of the homes and commercial buildings in Hearne's historic district attest to the prosperity of the local area's early plantation owners, railroad builders, merchants, bankers, and others. Take the Historic Hearne Tour either in person or online to relive Hearne's colorful past and enjoy the architectural splendor of days gone by.

Robertson County's most recent Texas Historic Marker commemorates the Camp Hearne World War II Prisoner Of War Camp. Some 5,000 prisoners, many of them from General Rommel's Afrika Korps, were housed at Camp Hearne between 1942 - 1946. A full-scale model of the camp is at the Hearne Chamber of Commerce office. Efforts are underway to preserve the camp and build a roadside park with a visitors center. Have you read the new book, Lone Star Stalag: German Prisoners Of War At Camp Hearne?

The Hearne Municipal Airport  runway is the longest in central Texas. Once used as a runway to shoot landings by fighter jets from the Strategic Air Command in San Antonio, the Hearne Airport now hosts Robertson County's Air Weather Observation System (AWOS). This link to the National Weather Service provides pilots and others with local weather conditions. With 7,200 feet of paved runway infrastructure already in place, efforts are underway to expand the Hearne Municipal Airport.

Did you know that Hearne is one of fourteen Texas towns/cities and two Texas counties to receive the coveted Preserve America community status? Preserve America is a White House initiative which recognizes communities which protect and celebrate their heritage, use their historic assets for economic development and community revitalization, and encourage people to experience and appreciate local historic resources through education and heritage tourism programs. Hearne is also on the Texas Historical Commission's Texas Brazos Trail.

The City of Hearne and the Hearne Chamber of Commerce are proud community and business Texas Yes! members. Texas Yes! is a new initiative from the Texas Department of Agriculture designed to spotlight rural Texas and promote rural Texas tourism.
