Installation Instructions ------------------------- Note: we are currently writting an install program that should handle most of these steps. Until then... The DogTrax system is distrubted in a "zip" file which contains the program, an empty database, and a directory (named "help") with the help files. It also comes with 2 ".dll" files which are required for the program to run correctly. These instructions ASSUME you have a program which can uncompress a ZIP file. If you do not have a program, you may download one for free from http://www.winzip.com/. It is also available on the CD with the filename "winzip81.exe" - run this program to install WinZip on your computer. Step 1: Create a directory * You will want to create a directory for the DogTrax program, database, and help files to reside. You can put the program anywhere, so long as the DogTrax files remain together. Example: C:\Program Files\DogTrax Step 2: unzip the compressed file into the new Directory. If this is done correctly, you should have the following in the new directory: C:\Program Files\DogTrax Dog Trax.exe (or "Dog Trax - DEMO.exe") Dog Trax.mdb mfc42.dll msvcrt.dll help\ (a folder named "help") Step 3: Creating a shortcut to the program. Using your mouse, RIGHT-click on the "Dog Trax.exe" file and select "Copy". Move your mouse pointer to a blank area of your desktop, RIGHT-click again, and select "Paste Shortcut". You can now click on this icon to open the DogTrax program. For some (most people), your installation is complete. Run the program and if it opens, you are ready to begin entering data. For the folks who do not have MS Office, or the appropriate database drivers already installed, there are a couple more steps you need to complete. Step 4. Install the database drivers. These are included on the CD, or may be downloaded from either the DogTrax website at http://www.dogtrax.biz/ or directly from the Microsoft website at http://microsoft.com/data/download.htm. You will be installing the "MDAC" and "JET" drivers (use the latest versions available if you ae downloading from the MS website). The filenames on the CD are: "mdac_typ.exe" and "Jet40Sp3_Comp.exe". You must install the MDAC file first - double click on the "mdac_typ.exe" file and it will begin the install proceedure. It will probably require you to reboot your computer when it is completed - if it doesn't reboot automatically, go ahead and restart the system manually. Once the MDAC install is complete, double click on the Jet40Sp3_Comp.exe file to install the Jet (MS Office) drivers. Again, when the install is complete, restart your computer (if it did not do so automatically). NOW your installation should be complete. If you have problems with these steps, please contact me at chris.barnes@mail.com. I will give installation issues a very high priority.
