TWO MEMBERS OF U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
to represent hearne & robertson County

In 2003, the Texas Legislature passed and Governor Rick Perry signed into law a new legislative redistricting plan for Texas.  This law significantly alters the geographic boundaries of districts for Members of the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas.  A federal appeals court has upheld this congressional redistricting plan.  The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to review the plan.

So, what does this new re-districting law do to Hearne and Robertson County?

Under this plan, Hearne and Robertson County will be represented by NOT ONE but TWO members in the U.S. House of Representatives.  The local area will be split between the 17th and 31st congressional districts.

Most of Robertson County, including the northern, eastern, and western parts of the county, is in the 17th Congressional District (in yellow on maps).  This district also includes parts of Burleson and Limestone counties as well as all of Brazos, Grimes, Madison, Grimes, McLennan, Hill, Bosque, Somervell, Hood, & Johnson counties.

The southern part of Robertson County is part of the 31st Congressional District (in blue on maps).  Robertson is the only partial county in this district which also includes all of Milam, Williamson, Bell, Falls, Coryell, Hamilton, & Erath counties.

All of Franklin, Calvert, and Bremond are in the 17th Congressional District.

The more detailed second map shows that the 17th Congressional District is north of US 79 as it comes into Robertson County from the west.  The dividing line between the 17th and 31st Congressional Districts generally tracks US 79 through Hearne to about Elliott.  It then zigs and zags through the county in an easterly direction until it hits OSR and the Brazos County line.

The City Of Hearne is divided between the 17th and 31st Congressional Districts.  The third map shows how the dividing line comes into Hearne from the west on US 79 (Brown Street), turns left on Post Oak Street (at the EMS office), turns right on Third Street (near the old ice house), turns left on Cedar Street (at city hall), goes down Cedar Street, angles to the right (tracking the railroad for two blocks to take in the old Willie Sander warehouse and Sonic), then turns right down Market Street.

This means that even though the old city hall and new city hall buildings are within spitting distance of one another, they're in different congressional districts.  It also means that Dee Weatherford’s trailer sales office on Market Street is in the 31st Congressional District while the lot across the street where most of his trailers are parked (on the railroad track side of Market Street) is in the 17th Congressional District.

When the dividing line gets back to Brown Street (at the overpass near McDonald’s), it turns left, goes up to Norwood Lane, turns left again, then goes to just beyond West Henry Prairie Road.
