Location: Lies on the Frio River four miles west of Three Rivers off State Highway 72 in
McMullen and Live Oak counties.
Description: This reservoir was constructed to serve as a water supply for Corpus Christi, an
hour's drive south. Drought has caused heavy drawdowns and negatively impacted fishing.
Gradually sloping banks and abundant wildlife surround a lake that still holds plenty of native
cover.
Controlling Authority: City of Corpus Christi.
TPWD Fisheries Office: 236 Redwood Dr., Mathis, TX 78368, (512) 547-9712.
Fishing Regulations: Same as statewide.
Stocking History:
Comments: Sadly, the lake level fluctuates more than most any lake in Texas, 15 feet in December
1989. This disrupts spawning activity for game fish. This lake may hold more giant alligator
gar -- 150 pounds or more -- than any reservoir in the nation.
Lake Records:
| Species | Pounds | Inches | Angler |
| Largemouth bass | 14.66 | 26.00 | Sterling M. Kelly |
| Hybrid striped bass | 16.56 | 25.50 | William J. Norris |
| Blue catfish | 70.50 | 49.00 | John Calvin Moose |
| Black crappie | 3.50 | 16.50 | James Plotts |
Fishing Tips: Late spring and early summer are best for catching channel catfish during their
spawn. Veteran anglers bait an area with soured grain then fish it with blood bait or
earthworms. Ten-pound channel catfish are not unheard of. A sidelight to this fishing is some
of the best wildlife watching to be found on any lake in the state.
Fishing Quality:

Facilities: Public camping and boat launch facilities abound, including Calliham Unit (512/786-3868) and South Shore Unit (512/786-3583) of Choke Canyon State Park. The Calliham Unit has
herds of deer, flocks of wild turkey, coveys of quail and dozens of hog-like javelinas for
wildlife photographers.
