Size: 78,300 acres
Age: Impounded in 1954

Location: Lies on the Rio Grande 75 miles south of Laredo, off U.S. 83 in the Rio Grande Valley.

Description: The reservoir was built for irrigation, hydro-electric power and recreation. Heavy demand on this water causes severe level fluctuations. Water clarity varies, depending on the wind and nearby shoreline. Average depth is 31 feet.

Fishing Regulations: Same as statewide. A Mexican fishing license is required to fish on the Mexican side.

Comments: The fish population is determined largely by water level fluctuations, with tremendous population growth after the lake level rises. In years past, illegal netting has been an additional problem.

Fishing Tips: Anglers who fish bucktail jigs and diving plugs near the dam often catch mixed stringers of both black bass and stripers. Best action usually comes on flooded mounds and creek beds in 15-30 feet of water.
