O.H. Ivie Reservoir

Size: 19,200 acres
Age: Impounded in 1990

Location: Lies on the Concho and Colorado rivers, 15 miles southwest of Ballinger in Runnels, Concho and Coleman counties. Access is via Farm Road 1929.

Description: This eagerly awaited reservoir blends traditionally fertile water from the Concho with clear, often-salty flows from the Colorado. The water district left some of the native timber in the main lake basin. This, combined with underwater humps and creek channels, gives the lake abundant cover by West Texas standards. Early studies indicate the maximum depth will be 120-125 feet, making it one of the deepest in the region.

Controlling Authority: Colorado River Municipal Water District, Box 869, Big Spring, TX 79721, (915) 267-6341.

TPWD Fisheries Office: 4002 N. Chadbourne, San Angelo, TX 76903, (915) 655-9413.

Fishing Regulations: Bass -- Three per day, all at least 18 inches long. All others same as statewide.

Stocking History:

Flathead catfish -- 1990
Florida bass -- 1989, 90, 91
Channel catfish -- 1990
Blue catfish -- 1990
White crappie -- 1990, 91
Coopernose bluegill -- 1990
Smallmouth bass -- 1990
Walleye -- 1991

Comments: This new reservoir, named for the president of the Colorado River Water District, is a welcome addition to the West Texas fishing scene. Watch this one. It has been stocked with smallmouth bass and the so-called "Arkansas strain" of walleye that has reached weights of 21-22 pounds in Arkansas and Missouri.

Lake Records: No lake records have been established at this time.

Fishing Tips: Even as the lake was still filling in 1991, anglers were catching 50- 100 bass a day, using plastic worms and spinnerbaits. Most of the bass were 14 inches long, still under the 18-inch minimum for angler possession. But an occasional six-pounder surprises the unsuspecting fisherman.

Fishing Quality:

Largemouth bass -- (projected)
Catfish -- (projected)
Crappie -- (projected)
Smallmouth -- (projected)

Facilities: The Water District has built three recreation areas, including a 400-acre facility at the dam. Boat ramps, unpaved parking, camp sites and picnic grounds await the visitor who pays $3 admission. Private RV camp, bait shop and concessionaire are due to open in spring, 1992.
