Stocking History:
Comments: Legend has it this reservoir received its colorful name from fur trappers who found the populations of opossums to be the highest they had seen. Florida bass stockings of the late 1970s have helped make this perhaps the top trophy largemouth lake in the western half of the state. Striper fishing can be spectacular at times and during the winter months, a put-and-take program by the Texas Parks and Wildlife provides and excellent winter rainbow trout fishery in the tailrace below the dam.
Lake Records:

Fishing Tips: Though this lake has produced a 16-pound largemouth and several others over 10 pounds, stripers may be the feature species here, especially during the warm-weather months when the big open-water fish gather in active schools. Guides and regulars find these fish by watching birds feeding on bait driven to the surface by hungry snipers below, or with careful study of their fishing electronics. White bucktail jigs with chartreuse or white plastic trailers are popular lures.
