IN THE BEGINNING
The Genesis of the Round Top Register

Editor’s Note: One day as I was sitting on the Square eating some of Bud Royer’s stuffed Quail. (It was a busy Saturday and the wait was an hour so I talked JB into slipping a couple out the side door); I saw a dirty piece of newsprint tumbling across the grass in front of the town hall. Being a public minded citizen, I walked over to pick it up and put it in the trash.
It was a little newspaper with no name and a 72 point banner across the tops shouting...
WHO AM I?
At the bottom of page one was a story with the headline, "WANDERING NEWSPAPER SEEKS IDENTITY"
It is printed below. One thing led to another and before I knew it, the little paper and I had worked out a partnership. We held a "Name the Paper" contest and that was how the Round Top Register came to be.
Round Top- I would like to introduce myself but I can’t. I don’t know who I am. My only clues are memories, fragments really... the comforting pressure of the rolling press, the smell of ink... that sort of thing. Then... nothing. It’s just a blank. I don’t know where I came from, who my first City Editor was, who layed me out.
At first I tried to make the best of it... but I soon found out that no one has much use for a tabloid with amnesia. I felt bitter. For a while I just bummed around, took a stray advertisement here and there...got handed out at a few fairgrounds. It wasn’t much of a life.
Most people think it’s glamorous being in the print biz but journalism’s not all Watergate, mass murders, Washington sex and fun stuff. There’s a dark side. You don’t know how bad it can get until you’ve spent some time lining the bottom of a bird cage.
Anyway, that’s how it was until I blew into Round Top. I like what I see, lots of good news and no competition. I think I could start over here..make a new life...get a good name for myself... got one?
